    Effie (Tootie) Cornelius Scott

    March 12, 1922 - April 2, 2009

    Effie “Tootie” Cornelius Scott, 87, of Brian Center Statesville, formerly of 296 East Lackey Farm Road, Stony Point, passed away Thursday, April 2, 2009 at Iredell Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. She was born March 12, 1922, in Catawba County to the late Salonia Cornelius and Mary Covington Cornelius. She attended Catawba County Schools. She retired from Stella Morris Hospital in Townson, MD. After moving back to Stony Point, she rejoined her family at Philadelphia United Methodist Church, she served as a communion steward, member of the Senior Choir and former President of the United Methodist Women. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, whom she married in 1940, James Scott; one brother, Calvin Cornelius; eight sisters, Ethel Butler, Maggie Holly, Virginia Collier, Rosie Robinson, Sarah Young, Emma Lineburger, Pauline Gibbs and Georgia Carruth. Left to cherish her loving memory is her daughter, Shirley Stokes and husband Ted of Stony Point; a special and devoted friend of 42 years, Melvin Truesdale of Stony Point; two grandsons, Ted Stokes Jr. and wife Terry, Kenny Stokes and wife Darlene all of Stony Point; two granddaughters, Wanda Martin and husband Dwight F., Sheril Summers and husband David all of Statesville; four great grandchildren: Stephanie Burch of Georgia, Craig Blackwelder Jr of Statesville, Ted Stokes III and Latasha Stokes of Stony Point; two great-great grandchildren, Azontae Stevenson and Azaria Stokes; one great-great godson, Kiantae Heard of Statesville; one brother in law, John Scott of Statesville; one sister in law, Virginia Campbell and husband Clarence of High Point; Special friends from Maryland, Margaret Bess and husband Ernie, Renee Ferguson and husband Mark; Robert and Melvin Truesdale, Jr.; a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and special friends. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00pm Monday April 6, 2009 at Philadelphia United Methodist Church. Rev. Mark Clark will be officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 1:00-1:55pm at the church, and other times at the home of daughter, Mr. & Mrs. Ted Stokes at 4901 Taylorsville Hwy., Stony Point. Memorials may be given to Philadelphia United Methodist Church, “Fellowship Hall Fund” 4165 Old Mountain Rd., Stony Point, NC 28678. We would also like to thank the employees of Brian Center of Statesville and the Philadelphia United Methodist Church.
