Mary Sumpter Ward, age 75 of 1790 3rd Ave. NW, Hickory passed away Saturday June 5, 2010 at Catawba Valley Hospice and Palliative Care in Newton. She was born August 15, 1934 in Caldwell County to the late Wallace Sumpter and Johnesine Pope Sumpter. She retired from textile work and was a member of Bright Light Tabernacle.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe G. Ward; one son, Joe H. Ward; one daughter, Brenda Sue Ward; three brothers, Joel Sumpter, Cleth Sumpter and Bill Sumpter; four sisters, Etta Calloway, Sarah Taylor, Joyce Sumpter, and Mamie Sumpter.

She is survived by one son, Alvin Joe Ward and wife Teresa of Morganton; three daughters, Linda Collins and husband John of Vale; Ellen Smart and husband Melvin of Granite Falls, Norma Damico and husband Donald of Clearwater, FL; two brothers, Charles Sumpter of Sawmills and Sonny Sumpter of Lenoir; two sisters, Frances Tolbert of Lenoir and Annie Soots of Granite Falls; eighteen grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00am Tuesday June 8, 2010 at Bright Light Tabernacle. The body will lie in state thirty minutes prior to the funeral hour. Rev. Ray York will officiate. Burial will follow in the Catawba Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7:00-9:00pm Monday evening at Bright Light Tabernacle.

Pallbearers include Mark Robinson, Bobby Ward, Alvin Ward, David Collins, Neil Shronce, and Willie Hare.
