Ruby Bernice Sloan McLain, age 73 of 634 Damascus Church Rd, Statesville passed away Tuesday November 24, 2009 at Iredell Memorial Hospital, after an extended illness. She was born May 20, 1936 in Iredell County to the late Wade Sloan and Annie Martin Sloan.
Mrs. McLain was a graduate of Central High School 1954, Valedictorian of her class, and a graduate of Carolina Business College in Charlotte.

She was employed for 2 years in Charlotte at Carolina Wholesale Building Materials, 4 years at Gilbert Engineering Company in Statesville, and a retired secretary of Central School after 20 years of service. She was a member of Friendly Chapel Baptist Church where she served as Sunday school teacher, church clerk and pianist. And she was also a Lifetime member of the ladies auxiliary VFW Post 10,000 Hiddenite.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Rev. James “Babe” McLain of the home; one son, Tom McLain and wife Angela of Mt Holly; one daughter, Teryl “Terry” Steelman and husband Russell of Wake Forest; five sisters, Katherine Sprinkle of Hiddenite, Yvonne Gibson of Taylorsville, Virginia “Ginger” Donahue and Linda Ziglar both of Statesville, and Susan Raymer of Burke County; four grandchildren, Craig Steelman, Carol Steelman, Erica McLain, and Wade McLain.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00pm Saturday November 28, 2009 at Fairview Baptist Church. Rev. Ruel Fox, Rev. James McLain and Tom McLain will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00pm Friday evening at Fairview Baptist Church.
Central Fire Department Members will serve as honorary pallbearers.
