John Thomas “Tater” Henderson, 73, of 2118 W. Memorial Hwy, Union Grove, passed away, Monday, June 22, 2009, at his home. He was born on July 2, 1935, in Iredell County to the late Tyra Henderson and Della Mae Williams Henderson. He served in The United States Navy. He retired after 30 years with the NC Department of Transportation and was a lifetime and faithful member of Grassy Knob Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Judith “Marie” Shumaker Henderson.

He is survived by two sisters, Bobbie Stephenson and husband Harry of Cary, Sybil Tomlinson of Statesville; five nephews, Don Stephenson, Rick Stephenson, Craig Stephenson all of Cary, Harold Tomlinson, Jr. of Statesville, and Jason Shumaker of Union Grove; two nieces, Amanda Shumaker Coleman and husband Scott of Union Grove and Debra Tomlinson Smith of Statesville.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:00pm Thursday June 25, 2009 at Grassy Knob Baptist Church. Rev. Jim Miles will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00pm at the church fellowship hall prior to the funeral and assemble other times at the home.

Pallbearers include: Harold Tomlinson Jr., Scott Coleman, Jason Shumaker, Don Stephenson, Rick Stephenson and Craig Stephenson. Honorary Pallbearers include: The Cook Shack Breakfast Club, The Saturday Pickers and Fellow D.O.T. Employees.

Memorials may be given to the Grassy Knob Baptist Church, 333 Grassy Knob Rd., Union Grove, NC 28689.
