Jack Dempsey Gilreath, age 82, of 705 Marlow Rd., Hiddenite, passed away, Monday December 28, 2009 at Gordon Hospice House, after a lengthy illness. He was born on September 5, 1927 in Alexander County, to the late James Cleve Gilreath and Grace Kerley Gilreath. Mr. Gilreath attended Hiddenite School and drove a school bus. He served in the US Army during the Korean War and received a Purple Heart. Mr. Gilreath was a Golden Glove Boxer and worked for Caterpillar Corp. in Peoria, Illinois. He also attended Linneys Grove Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his two brothers, C H “Boyd” Gilreath, and Doris Gilreath; three sisters, Mildred Marie G Smith, Dorothy Harrington Fox and Lucille G Faust Dixon Lovette.

He is survived by his three brothers, Robert Dow Gilreath and wife Willene, Edsel Gilreath, Mark Gilreath and wife Elizabeth all of Hiddenite; six sisters, Jean G Mountcastle and husband T C of Smithfield, VA, Alice G Robertson of Taylorsville, Mittie G Johnson of Charleston, SC, Joan G Sykes and husband Cooper of Durham, Bonnie G Osmer and husband Fred of Taylorsville, Betty G Smith of Hiddenite; sister in law, Gayle Gilreath of Washington state; and several nephews and nieces.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00pm Saturday January 2, 2009 at Shady Grove Cemetery. Rev. Allen Fox and Rev Rex Rode will officiate. Military Rites will be provided. The family will receive friends from 12:30-1:30pm Saturday at Chapman Funeral Home prior to the service.

Pallbearers will include his nephews.
