Franklin Melvin Bridges, age 85 of 1550 Amity Hill Rd., Cleveland passed away Monday March 8, 2010 at his home, after a brief illness. He was born May 13, 1924 in Iredell County to the late Franklin Bridges and Della Shumaker Bridges Waugh. Mr. Bridges lived in Washington DC and was in the grocery business before returning to Cleveland in the 1960’s. He owned and operated a community grocery in Cleveland for several years and was a retired farmer. His hobby was collecting and restoring T-model Ford Cars and was a member of the T-Model Association of America. Mr. Bridges was a member of Elmwood Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Geneva Little; two brothers, Wilson Bridges and Howard Bridges; a half brother, Johnny Waugh; a half sister, Virginia Waugh.

He is survived by his wife, Gwen Alexander Bridges of the home; one step son, George Muse of Statesville; two daughters, Elizabeth Bridges of Los Angeles, CA and Heidi Sullivan of Laurel, MD; one brother, Bob Bridges of Statesville; four grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

Funeral services will be conducted 3:00pm Thursday March 11, 2010 at Elmwood Baptist Church. Rev. Rodney McAllister will officiate. Burial will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:30pm prior to the service at the church.

Pallbearers include: Church members and nephews.
