Noel Denton Benfield, Sr., 96, of 7554 NC Hwy 90E, Stony Point, passed away Monday, May 19, 2008, at his home. He was born on September 25, 1911, in Alexander County, to the late William David Benfield and Amy Moose Benfield. He was an elected Alexander County Surveyor and later was self employed as a surveyor, and he also worked 10 years for the United States Postal Service. He served in the United States Army during WWII in Africa and Italy. Mr. Benfield was also a member of South River United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by four brothers, Miles Ray Benfield, Robert Lee Benfield, Ernest David Benfield and William Howard Benfield; three sisters, Myra B Kerley, Christine B Cashion and Mary B Black. He is survived by his wife, Retta Sharpe Benfield of the home; one son, Denton Benfield and wife Jackie of Gastonia; two daughters, Nadine B Chapman and husband Gene of Stony Point and Alyce B Joines of Greensboro; six grandchildren: Kevin Chapman, Fonda Adams and husband Dale, Deanna Hissim and husband Dale, Andrew Chapman, Ashleigh Benfield and Noel Benfield III.; five great grandchildren, Jared Adams, Logan Adams, Illyana Chapman, Patrick Hissim and Amaryna Chapman. Funeral services will be conducted at South River United Methodist Church, Thursday at 4:00pm. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the funeral hour. Rev. Lynn Hawkins will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Military Rites will be provided by Hiddenite Post #10,000 and Taylorsville Post #5466. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7:00pm-8:30pm at South River United Methodist Church and at other times at the home. Memorials may be given to Hospice of Alexander County, 50 Lucy Echerd Lane, Taylorsville, NC 28681.

Sorry to hear about Uncle Noel's passing. You were so lucky to have him for such a long time. I remember the good times when we were growing up. The reunions, the food, the family, the cousins. We don't do that now or visit like we should. You are in my prayers. He is now home with my grandma Christine and other family. God Bless all of you.
